Fiveaversary Scavenger Hunt

In May 2023, my blog turns a whopping five years old! This was the secret deadline I gave myself to really do something with this odd little idea; I decided that if nothing came of it within five years, I'd give up and go do something else with my life. Well, it's been much more than I really ever expected it to be and it's growing all the time, so it's here to stay.

Naturally, the blog couldn't be what it is without all of you, the wonderful readers! That's why I want you to celebrate my "fiveaversary" with me, and so I've created this virtual scavenger hunt for all and sundry to enjoy.

The Rules:

  • You must be willing to provide me with a valid email address. I promise not to sell it to anyone or sign you up for anything; your email will be used only within the confines of this contest.
  • If you are under the age of 18, please get an adult to participate with you. AI participation is not allowed; I only want actual human beings entering this contest. Companion animals may assist if desired.
  • You may participate alone or in a team; however, due to budget constraints, I can only do so much for prizes. Remember, this is largely a one-woman operation.
  • You MUST NOT post the answers anywhere. Don't put them in a Facebook comment, don't put them in a comment on a post in the blog, don't tweet them. Anyone caught breaking this rule will be automatically disqualified. I'm sure my readers wouldn't do that, but it has to be said.
  • Prizes are non-transferable, non-negotiable, and may not be exchanged for cash. (Well, not with me. If you find someone else who wants to give you money, I'm not going to stop them.)
  • In the event of a tie, the bonus questions will help to determine the winner. If that doesn't work, I will defer to the wisdom of my tabletop gaming dice.
  • You must complete the scavenger hunt list no later than 11:59 p.m. EST on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 in order to be eligible for a prize. Responses can be turned in any time prior to that.
  • Only one contest entry is permitted per email address. You will not be able to change your answers after submitting the form, so take your time.

How to Play:

The scavenger hunt is entirely virtual, meaning that you don't have to even be in Pennsylvania to participate. To play, follow the link at the bottom of this post, which will take you to the list of questions in Google forms. You will be required to put in your email address (so I know how to contact you regarding prizes), and all questions must be answered.

The scavenger hunt will take the form of twenty questions about people who are either mentioned on PHMC markers or are part of the stories behind at least one marker, plus three bonus questions for tiebreaking purposes. All of the answers to the questions can be found within posts on my blog, so you just have to 'scavenge' through my history ramblings to find the correct responses; each main question is from a different county. They range from relatively easy to rather obscure! You can get a minor edge over the competition by following the blog on Facebook and/or Twitter, because I will periodically share clues to help you narrow down your search.

Yes, this is all a shameless plug.

After you've found the answers to all the questions, fill in the handy Google form and click submit so your answers will be sent to me. The hunt opens on Monday, May 1, 2023. It will conclude on Wednesday, May 24th, which is the blog's actual fifth anniversary. There may be balloons. Winners and correct answers will be revealed in the blog post on the following Wednesday, May 31st.

Everyone who participates will receive a token of my appreciation. The more correct answers you submit, the better your chances are to win one of the three main prizes. Originally these were all going to be Amazon.com gift cards, but one of my most consistent readers kindly reminded me that not everyone supports Amazon. Therefore, I've made a slight alteration to the plan, and each winner will get to select their prize. For the non-Amazon prizes, the winners must provide their mailing address (post office boxes or similar are fine), which will be used only for this purpose and then immediately forgotten by me.

First prize - $25 Amazon.com gift card OR a one-year subscription to Pennsylvania magazine

Second prize - $15 Amazon.com gift card OR a copy of the Pennsylvania Trail of History Cookbook, published by the same organization who puts up the historical markers

Third prize - $10 Amazon.com gift card OR a personally signed copy of my book Laury's Island: The Lehigh Valley's Forgotten Park

The contest is now closed. Thank you for your interest.
