Map and Trivia

Maybe you learned some of these things in school, maybe you didn't. But I've compiled a list of basic knowledge about our beloved commonwealth that you might find useful! (And if you're one of my coworkers, consider this a "cheat sheet" for the weekly trivia. The answers won't always be here, but sometimes they will!) All of these really have been signed into law as being official to Pennsylvania, as absurd as some of them may seem.

About Pennsylvania
    • State motto: "Virtue, Liberty, and Independence"
    • State nickname: The Keystone State
    • State song: "Pennsylvania" (yes, very on the nose)
    • State flag:

Official state animals
    • State animal: White-tailed deer
    • State dog: Great Dane (we do not have a state cat, which is unfair)
    • State bird: Ruffed grouse
    • State amphibian: Eastern hellbender
    • State fish: Brook trout
    • State insect: Firefly

Official state plants
    • State tree: Eastern hemlock
    • State flower: Mountain laurel

Other official state items
    • State beverage: Milk (which is also the state beverage of 19 other states)
    • State aircraft: Piper J-3 Cub
    • State firearm: Pennsylvania longrifle
    • State ship: U.S. Brig Niagara

Map of the counties

This is a map of Pennsylvania with the counties identified. Not sure where a marker is located? Just check this map to find the county! All my posts will always be tagged with the county and community in which the markers are found. You can access a larger version of the map by clicking on it.

This map was originally created by the University of Alabama and is made publicly available through YellowMaps.com, where it is free to use. No copyright infringement is intended.

If you're curious as to how the different counties received their names, LivingPlaces.com created an interesting fact sheet detailing the origins, which you can read here
