Pennsylvania and its history

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission - These are the nice people who actually own and create the signs which are the focus of this blog, and who gave me permission to write about them for fun and profit. You can see all the signs on this site, plus lots of other cool things too! Their non-profit partner is the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation.

Pennsylvania Trails of History - The official blog of the PHMC's Bureau of Sites and Museums, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the places and events on the Commonwealth's trails of history. They even give MarkerQuest a shout-out on one of their pages!

Pennsylvania Magazine - The go-to periodical for all things Keystone State. Read about events, people, and interesting facts from all over Pennsylvania.

Shop PA Heritage - A website for ordering various Pennsylvania history materials, including back issues of Pennsylvania Heritage magazine. It's the only place to find many publications issued by the commonwealth itself.

Historical Society of Pennsylvania - Since 1824, this Philadelphia-based archive has served as one of the oldest historical societies in the United States, with literally millions of records and items.

Directory of Pennsylvania Genealogical and Historical Societies - If you're doing research, either personal or professional, which leads you into the annals of the commonwealth, this is a great place to find contact information for various groups who can help you.

Century of Marking History - A few years before I started this blog, PHMC employees John Robinson and Karen Galle collaborated on this article about the first 100 years of erecting historical markers in Pennsylvania. It explains the difference between the kinds of markers and includes photographs from the PHMC archives.

Discover Lehigh Valley - I've lived my entire life in what was once termed 'the jewel in the wilderness,' Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley. This very informative website can show you just how much there is to love about my hometown area.

The Historical Marker Database - The editors of this website collect information about historical markers from all fifty states and elsewhere in the world. Read what they have to say and even contribute your own findings!

Mainly Museums - This crowdsourced blog features museums all over the world. It's relatively new, so things are still getting ironed out, but look for a certain familiar blogger sharing information about Pennsylvania museums in the near future!

Some YouTube channel recommendations

These are some history-themed channels which I've found on YouTube and think are worth sharing. They're not all related to Pennsylvania, but they all definitely have a lot of fantastic stuff to say.

The Hometown Historian - Jonathan and I not only work along very similar lines regarding Pennsylvania history, but we formed a mutual admiration society without realizing it, as we discovered each other's work independently! He has a lot to say about historical events and interesting places throughout the commonwealth, and his videos are entertaining as well as interesting. He even has a series dedicated to the same markers featured in this blog, so you'll occasionally hear him talking about me as one of his fact resources!

The Wandering Woodsman - Cliff, who is also friends with Jonathan, is another great resource for the hidden treasures of Pennsylvania's great outdoors and historical nature. He covers a wide variety of topics and his videos are very well presented.

Early American and Frontier Patriot - Ron and Justine are a happily engaged couple who recreate colonial and frontier life in the United States. The Early American channel sees Justine preparing different foods according to recipes from the 18th and 19th centuries, using period-accurate cookware on an open fire. The Frontier Patriot channel shows them actually eating and critiquing the food, as well as partaking in other activities from the era such as making crafts and using weapons. They are a super cute pair and really enjoyable to watch, so I'm happy I found them.

The History Underground - JD creates really great detailed videos about different aspects of American history. He's particularly interested in military history and he does an incredible job of sharing the stories of battles and battlefields in a polished, entertaining way.

CrowsEyeProductions - Nicole and her friends craft beautiful videos showing how women (and sometimes men) dressed throughout many different periods of history. From ancient Rome to World War II, they are painstakingly accurate in their descriptions and recreations, and it's fascinating to see how fashion has evolved.

History Tea Time with Lindsay Holiday - Lindsay examines figures, facts, and events from many different points in history around the entire world. Although many of her videos focus on the royals of Europe, she covers a wide variety of topics; ever wondered why there are sixty minutes in an hour? She has the answer!
